One page. One million pixels.
On 26 August 2005, Alex Tew, a 21-year-old student from Wiltshire, needed money for university. He built a single white web page, split it into a million pixels and sold them for $1 each, in blocks of 10 by 10.
Startups, newspapers, casinos and total strangers bought in. Five months later the last 1,000 pixels sold on eBay for $38,100 and the page closed at $1,037,100. It became a museum piece of the early web.
